Quoth the Raven #77 - Kenny Polcari

October 25, 2018

My friend Kenny Polcari joins me again to talk about:

1. The recent volatility in the markets

2. Why he thinks the Fed must continue to raise rates

3. Why he thinks Democrats taking the Senate could lead to 1,000 point drop in the Dow in one day

4. How he likes his vodka martinis

Kenny Polcari graduated from Boston University, School of Management in 1983 with a B.S. / B.A. degree: concentration finance.

He came to Wall Street as a summer intern on the New York Stock Exchange during the summers of '80, '81 & '82 and upon graduation moved from Boston, Mass. to New York City where he began his career on the trading floor. He became a member of the New York Stock Exchange in August, 1985 and is currently a Managing Director at O'Neil Securities, Inc. and represents the interests of institutional asset managers that need to access global equity markets. Earlier in his career, Kenny served as managing director at Icap Corps, LLC, and prior to that was senior vice president, member New York Stock Exchange and division manager with Salomon Brothers directing their NYSE Division during the heady bull market of the 1990's.

His 30 years of experience has taken him from the birth of the greatest bull market, to the crash of '87, the roaring '90's, the .com implosion, decimalization, 9/11, Regulation NMS, the merger between the NYSE / ARCA, then NYSE/Euronext, automation, HFT, and fragmentation. He is an engaging public speaker and you can find him speaking at industry & investor conferences, as well as colleges, forums and major asset manager events. He is at ease speaking about NYSE history, rules & regulation, former & current market structure including internalization, HFT and fragmentation and how those changes have forever changed the face of the U.S. capital markets and what that means to the investor. He writes a daily "Morning Thoughts" missive that is an informative, engaging and entertaining look at global markets and provides insight into the day's action. It has gained wide popularity and has become a signature of his "boots on the ground" analytical style. He is a member of STA and NOIP and is a guest lecturer for The American College. He holds the series 7, 24, 27, 55, 63 registrations.

October 10, 2018

Quoth the Raven #72 - SEC Charges Elon Musk with Fraud, Montana Skeptic Rides Again

September 27, 2018

The SEC has charged Elon Musk with fraud. What does it mean for Tesla going forward? What does it mean for shareholders? Customers? Will additional charges follow? Will the DOJ weigh in? I break down the entire situation for 30 minutes before being joined by the one, the only, Montana Skeptic - fresh off his several month hiatus.

Montana Skeptic is a well known Tesla skeptic and short seller who wrote frequently on Seeking Alpha and has over 4,000 followers. He manages a $1B+ portfolio for a family office and invests using bonds, equities, hedge funds, and private investments with a wide geographical and asset class dispersion. He has a J.D. degree from Yale Law School and he practiced for 30 years as a trial lawyer in commercial cases. Elon Musk called his boss and made him stop writing critically about the company several months ago. Today, he rides again exclusively on the QTR Podcast.

September 18, 2018

In this episode of my podcast - which I swear is not a Tesla exclusive podcast - I talk about the fact that it was reported today that Tesla was the subject of a criminal probe by the Department of Justice. I also talk about the irony of CNBC bringing on a guest to talk about this event who, after Musk's "Funding Secured" tweet, himself tweeted out that "This is not fake. This is real. Quoth the Raven #65 - Tesla Shitshow, Act 12: “Staying Public”

August 25, 2018

At 11PM EST on a Friday night last night, Elon Musk announced in a blog post that the company would be staying public. This ends a three week shit show that took place after he came out and said he was considering taking the company private at $420 per share and that he had funding secured. Quoth the Raven #64 - Mark Spiegel

August 24, 2018

I swear, this is not a Tesla-only podcast. But today, I spoke to Mark Spiegel, one of the world's most well known Tesla short sellers.

Mark B. Spiegel is the Managing Member & Portfolio Manager of Stanphyl Capital Partners and is a New York-based equity investor. Prior to founding Stanphyl in 2011, he spent six years as an investment banker (most recently as a Principal with Piper Jaffray & Co.) financing public companies. Prior to becoming an investment banker Mark spent a year working for a microcap Nasdaq tech company, and he began his career with 17 years in the commercial real estate industry where he experienced firsthand the opportunities and challenges faced by a wide array of client companies. Mark believes that all these experiences– banking public companies, working for a public company and securing real estate for a wide variety of companies– combine to provide the kind of “real world” experience that’s extremely useful for an investor.

August 19, 2018

Adam Spittler is an investor in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac preferred shares and has been following #FannieGate - the scandal of the government taking over Fannie and Freddie and essentially fucking over shareholders who lost nearly everything in the financial crisis - for years. In today's podcast, we talk about what has happened to Fannie and Freddie since the financial crisis, why investors lost everything to begin with, and what current shareholders are hoping with investments in the now decimated stock of both of these Government Sponsored Entities that are now in conservatorship. Quoth the Raven #58 - Roddy Boyd

August 7, 2018

Roddy Boyd heads up the Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation. On today's podcast, we talk about massive stories he broke on both Valeant and Insys, as well as the new book he is preparing and the one book he has already written. From there, we talk for a half hour about Tesla and Elon Musk's Tweet today that he is considering taking the company private for $420/share.

From SIRF-Online.org:

"Our foundation produces substantive investigative reporting without fear or favor. These investigations bring to life important stories that are going untold, illuminating the many ways investors, consumers and market stakeholders are regularly misled.

We accomplish this through carefully mining corporate legal and financial filings–such as a skillfully buried footnote inside a quarterly report, or an overlooked exhibit in a forgotten legal claim–which, when coupled with ample shoe leather reporting, presents the clearest possible picture of our subject.

The hallmark of the foundation’s reporting is a commitment to accuracy, the breadth of our news gathering and the clarity of our presentation. In doing this work, our goal is to conduct the foundation’s business to meet or exceed the highest standards of non-profit governance and ethical journalism. To that end, apart from truth and increased knowledge, our work will be free of agenda. The completed investigations are published free of charge, without advertisements or sponsors.

We are funded solely through the tax-deductible contributions of individual donors and foundations, none of whom derive any professional or economic benefit from this support. No one, apart from the foundation’s employees and our legal advisors, has any input to editorial decisions. The foundation’s employees, directors and advisors will never benefit financially from the price movements in the securities or derivatives of companies mentioned in our journalism."

In this podcast, I review the good and the bad from Tesla's Q2 earnings in the most objective way I possibly can. Tesla reported a Q2 that was mostly in line with expectations of a financial wreck. The silver lining (for now) was Elon Musk' behavior, an answer about a Wells Notice and a story-line that the company is keeping in tact. I do my best to be objective and explain why Tesla is rallying post-earnings and what it could mean for investors in the short and long term.

Quoth the Raven #54 - Aaron Greenspan, Creator of the First Harvard “Face Book”

July 28, 2018

Aaron Greenspan is the self-proclaimed missing piece from the Facebook story as it has been documented in films like "The Social Network". He joins me on my podcast to talk about his role in creating the first "Face Book", why he thinks Mark Zuckerberg is a "sociopath" and "threat to national security", Facebook's most recent scandal, the stock's recent plunge, and why he believes the number of Facebook fake accounts are understated.

Aaron is an entrepreneur and engineer with a background in enterprise software. He is the President & CEO of Think Computer Corporation (http://www.thinkcomputer.com), as well as the founder of Think Computer Foundation (http://www.thinkcomputer.org), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Aaron has worked on engineering problems involving accounting, payments, and legal systems, among others. Though not a lawyer, he has represented himself and his company before several state and federal courts, as well as the United States Patent and Trademark Office Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Aaron has an A.B. in Economics from Harvard College and is the author of a memoir about his time there, during which he developed the predecessor to The Facebook.

Aaron also contributes to legal website PlainSite. In addition to making huge volumes of data accessible to the public free of charge, PlainSite lets ordinary citizens impact the law-making process.

Follow him on Twitter @PlainSite and @AaronGreenspan

Quoth the Raven #52 - Ranting About Dennis Gartman and the Financial Media

July 21, 2018

In this podcast, I "shall" rant about how Dennis Gartman recently took offense to Zerohedge simply pointing out the fact that he is consistently wrong. From there, I dovetail nicely into a critique about the financial media that all started when a CNBC anchor cut me in line for a sandwich at an investment conference in 2013.

Quoth the Raven #50 - Montana Skeptic vs. HyperChange TV on Tesla

July 16, 2018
Today's podcast was a structured debate between Tesla bull Galileo Russell from HyperChange TV - who famously got to appear on the company's conference call last quarter - and Montana Skeptic, a Tesla short seller who has been publicly critical of the company and who has appeared on my podcast in the past.

The debate was a structured format, with each participant getting the exact same time to speak and I did my best to moderate it in an objective fashion where I was not participating. Participants both agreed to the format ahead of time and each had a chance to make an opening statement and then address, and rebut, on three topics dealing with Tesla (one selected by each participant and one selected by me). From there, participants made their closing statements.

Quoth the Raven #49 - Elon Musk Reportedly a Top Donor To Republican PAC, Liberals Go Apeshit

July 15, 2018

The last thing I want to do is two podcasts in one day. And the last LAST thing I want to do is yet another podcast about Tesla. With that being said, it wasn't seconds after I finished my last podcast that it was revealed that Elon Musk was a top donor to a GOP PAC responsible for trying to keep Republican control of Congress. This has triggered the left and could be terrible for Elon Musk's public persona. I take to the air for an emergency Saturday night podcast to analyze and explain the situation.

Quoth the Raven #48 - Elon Musk Told By Rescue Worker To Shove His Thai Cave Solution Up His Ass

July 14, 2018

When 12 kids and their soccer coach were rescued from a cave in Thailand, the entire world rejoiced. Except for Elon Musk, who took shots at the joint co-commander of the operation for not using his proposed solution. Late last week, an interview with another rescue worker on CNN International was released and has the rescue worker on camera not only saying that Musk could take his solution and ”stick it where it hurts“ but also stating that it would’ve never worked and basically that Elon had no idea what he was doing. I offer my take on the situation.

Quoth the Raven #47 - What in God’s Name is Elon Musk Doing?

July 5, 2018

Instead of being thankful for the fact that his company still has a $50B+ valuation despite not turning a consistent profit, Elon Musk has chosen to spend most of his time nowadays on Twitter blaming everyone - ex-employees, CNBC, the Economist, Linette Lopez, oil companies and many others - for Tesla's troubles. I offer my thoughts on the situation, as well as what I think Elon could do tomorrow morning to make Tesla's standing as a public company much better.

Quoth the Raven #45 - Tesla, Tents and Team Member Turnover

June 29, 2018

It's been an interesting week in the world of Tesla. New information and photos have been published, detailing the company's hastily built production tent outside of its Fremont factory. More team members, including the company's Chief Information Officer, have also reportedly left. Also, Reuters reported that the company has still fallen short of its 5,000 Model 3 per week goal. Could this be the company purposely leaking false information to the media as a way to troll them?

Quoth the Raven #44 - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Insane Political Platform that Won Her a Seat in Congress

June 27, 2018

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been the story of the week, undoubtedly - and there's no doubt she has accomplished something remarkable, ousting 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th congressional district this week. As CNN put it, she "won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley -- the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House -- outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin." She's no doubt the new hero for liberals. But the platform that she ran on and won with is nothing short of insane, and would be a disaster to both New York, and the country - if implemented. I explain my thoughts on why.

Quoth the Raven #41 - Kenny Polcari Talks About the 9/11 Attacks from the New York Stock Exchange

June 6, 2018

(Audio improves throughout podcast)

Kenny Polcari comes on and walks us through what the events of 9/11 were like from the floor of the NYSE, and the lasting impact that these events had on the way stocks traded after 2001.

Quoth the Raven #39 - Another Tesla Autopilot Accident: A Deadly Serious Discussion

May 29, 2018

Fair warning, this is a relatively serious podcast with little humor content. Why? Because another Autopilot incident was reported today, this time by the Laguna Beach Police Department, who put on their Twitter that a Model S had smashed into the side of a police cruiser while on Autopilot. The officer that spoke to the media said a similar accident happened at the same place in the road prior. This leads me to take a serious tone and ask a couple of questions: what are the lengths of negligence that Tesla could be found liable for, is the marketing being doing wrong for Autopilot or is the software literally being "debugged" on the road and who is going to finally step in and realize that lives could continue to be put at risk?

Quoth the Raven #37 - Jim Cramer is Telling People Domino’s Pizza is a Technology Company, Someone Kill Me Please

May 26, 2018

I was going to do a nice podcast about Memorial Day weekend until I walked downstairs and saw on the TV that Jim Cramer is apparently telling people that Dominos Pizza is a technology company now. I guess he is trying to justify the company having a 26X multiple and nearly 6X EBITDA in debt. This represents the absolute worst of the worst and I go on a rant about it, also trying to hold Mr. Cramer’s feet to the fire on past market manipulation statements he’s made and his propensity to have a long bias while hypocritically acting like short sellers are the worst thing in the world.

Quoth the Raven #36 - Matt Stewart Discusses Carl Icahn Exiting His Herbalife Position

May 25, 2018

In a podcast that I did last week, I had Matt Stewart on to talk about the state of the Herbalife trade. One of the things that we tossed around was how Mr. Icahn was going to exit his stake in the company. With the news breaking today that Carl Icahn and Icahn Enterprises has tendered a significant portion of its shares back to the company, I thought it only fitting to have Matt back on the podcast to discuss what this exit means, and how Mr. Icahn may proceed moving forward.

Matt Stewart was one of my favorite people to read while the Herbalife debate was ongoing. He published over 180 quick witted articles on Seeking Alpha and because a friend of mine in the process. He's a private investor, former vice president & director of RBC Dominion Securities Inc. in Toronto and holds an Honors BA from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from the F.W. Olin School of Business at Babson College. Matt also represented all BCE common shareholders as the 'intervenor' in the BCE v. Bondholder's case argued before the Supreme Court of Canada in July, 2008.

Quoth the Raven #35 - The Rigged Stock Market Is Guaranteed to Crash Again, But When?

May 22, 2018

In this podcast, I talk about monetary policy as a whole - why I think its insane and why our current policy ensures that we are going to have another financial crisis much larger than the one we had in 2008. I talk about how the Fed is making problems worse by selectively bailing out companies and I give examples of actual free markets. If the stock market is just guaranteed to always go up and guys like Warren Buffett predict the Dow is just going to keep going to 1,000,000, is that really a market - or is it one of the biggest long cons in history? Hint: it's the latter.

Quoth the Raven #34 - Elon Musk is Not Steve Jobs: Why The Comparisons Need to Stop

May 20, 2018

This podcast discusses the two most common people who have recently been compared to Steve Jobs: Elizabeth Holmes, who has now been sued for fraud by the SEC and Elon Musk who - uh - hasn't. In this podcast I talk about the history of Apple and Steve Jobs as it compares to both Elizabeth Holmes and Elon Musk. I point out similarities and differences between Apple and Jobs when Apple first went public and Tesla and Elon Musk as it exists today.
